It’s All About the Cavaliers

Those of you following us on Facebook will remember when I started puppy dreaming over this black and tan boy. I know if I get another Cavalier it will be a black and tan and it was almost unbelievable that this boy would show up in my state. We rarely get Cav puppies in rescue here and black and tans are extremely rare in rescue anywhere. So when he showed up I naturally started dreaming.

Many people thought I was crazy for passing him up. I know that it seems crazy to pass up the chance to rescue my dream dog without having to fly across the country like I did for Magnus. The thing is I have very strict rules for myself about when I can get another puppy. Also it’s just not the time for me to bring a new puppy into the house. It wouldn’t be fair to the puppy or to Maizey and Magnus. The other reason is going to shock all of my Cavalier loving readers. . .

I am fascinated my other breeds. I was considering. . . a different breed. GASP! I know! You can hardly believe your eyes!

I love my Cav’s but I have concerns. As they get older I know I’m in for heart murmurs among other expensive and emotional illnesses. Grooming two Cav’s is really a lot of work. And I never have got over missing having a big dog.

Then I met my first French Bulldog a few weeks ago. I really started thinking maybe this was my big dog feel in the convenience of a small body. They are really cool dogs and have less health problems than Cav’s. So I started doing my research and contemplating a new breed.

So back to the little black and tan boy. . . He got adopted and it took the dream off the table. The coolest thing is that the people that adopted him are bringing him to puppy class at work. Plus in his class is an 18 week old Frenchie. So today I went on a mission of exploration. I figured if I went to their class I could see side by side where my heart really was. Am I a total Cav girl? Or do I want to start over with a new breed?

Any guesses as to the answer? Well, the little Frenchie boy was super sweet! He was a lover and very smart. But. . . that black and tan boy stole my heart!

I can’t even tell you why. All I know is every time that sweet, soft boy scampered into my lap I just melted. I pretty much turned into a gooshing, gooey, cooing girl. It was embarrassing! But it was a good thing to do, it settled in my heart where my true love lies. For now, it’s all about the Cavaliers!

A Little of This and a Little of That

It has been hard to find time to post lately and I really miss blogging. Between writing my lesson plans for the classes I’m assisting and hope to teach one day soon, writing the column for the local paper, reading my reference books for my CPDT, working, walking, and life. . . Whew! Blogging just seems to get neglected. So prepare yourself for one of these chatty posts that contain little useful info, but I always enjoy going back and reading.

First I want to send thoughts to our blogging friend Gizmo. He was just diagnosed  with osteosarcoma and needs all the well wishes we can send him. Having lost a Rottie to this awful disease, my heart goes out to him and his family. maybe you can hope over and leave him and his mom a note or send some kind thoughts his way. The end is the worst part of having a dog and I know we’ve all been through it.

"Do you have to go again??"

On a lighter and less important note, my last column was about how to choose the best dog for you, which is funny cause lately I’ve been puppy dreaming over a totally new breed. I love my Cav’s, but I’m fascinated by the differences on breeds. This week we had a 10 week old French Bulldog in puppy class. I’m now obsessed with Frenchies. That little dog is so funny! He’s totally a big dog in a little, teeny, tiny body. The AKC describes them as, “a clown in the cloak of a philosopher.” I love puppy dreaming. It’s totally unrealistic, but it fun.

The dogs aren’t loving me working. They really can’t understand why Crazymomlady is gone so much, but I think they’re loving the perks of all the good stuff I keep bringing home.

I’m reading Patricia McConnell’s Fiesty Fido Help For the Leash Reactive Dog. It’s interesting, as all of her stuff is. She talks about why dogs react on leash. Of course she presents the reason most of us are familiar with, the “I’ll scare you before you scare me” train of thought.

She also talks about exuberant frustration, where a dog is not afraid, but overly friendly and after so many times of being stopped from greeting the other dog by the leash he develops a negative association with the approach of another dog. These dogs often play nice when off leash, but the years of frustration of being denied what they want boils over into aggression when on leash.

One idea I had never thought of was that a dog who barks and lunges to the end of his collar associates the pain caused by the a collar check with the approach of another dog. You can imagine how this would be exacerbated by a training or prong collar.

On a totally different note, remember when I was worried about Magnus being ginormous? Well he is! We had to go to the vet last week and he weighs 19 pounds! I don’t know why but just in the last week or so he started looking really grown up to me. That’s probably why I’ve been so puppy hungry. I was always worried if he weighed that much he would look fat, but the bet said he was perfect for his structure. He really is a sold boy, but I think the thing that makes him look more grownup than anything is he’s finally getting his ears on him. I love Cavalier ears, and his are going to be great. Sometimes he just looks like a little lion with is read hair all fluffy.

Obviously I fell off the Relaxation Protocol band wagon. Now of course I regret letting myself slack cause Maizey’s stress level has been higher this week than in the last month combined. I intend to remedy that today.

So all in all we’re doing good. I’m Working on a monday miles post now so start getting your miles ready for tomorrow. I’d love to hear from every member of the Challenge.  So there’s my chatty post. Lots going on and still more to do as usual. I hope you all keep checking by!

Dogs Make Us happy, Does Our Happiness Make Them Happy?

Admittedly I am biased, but how could these faces not bring a grin to yours? I know they make me laugh every day!

Although there were so many things we learned during the c/t contest on the Training Levels Yahoo Group one thing I loved seeing was how we reacted to a simple game with our 4legged friends.

One point of the contest was to help us improve our clicker skills. There are other things I have done to try and increase my skills such as clicking when a commercial changes or when a traffic light changes. I know others have tried these and other tricks also. But this game has a motivating benefit that the dogs love it. When you are watching them “hoover” up the treats one after another, clearly thinking they won the treat lottery, their joy is contagious.

As the times started pouring in people were getting faster and faster. And people kept trying and reporting over and over, making and posting video’s. (Which you should really check out!) I have to wonder would we all have got so excited over contest to click commercials? I think the fact that the dogs loved this game so much made us love it.

So does that work in reverse? Could our excitement have been helping our dogs be excited? Was our joy helping them be “in the game”? I think so. (And I’m sure the treats didn’t hurt!)

What other anecdotal evidence is there that joy is contagious no matter how many legs you have? Meeka is good example. If we start laughing, at anything, she will nearly always respond with excitement. Even if something strikes us funny on the t.v. she responds to our reaction.

How? She turns into “wild-girl”. Wriggling, prancing, nubbin waggin’, growly and woofing. The more excited we get the more excited she gets. Is she joyful because we are? I’d like to think so.

Maizey? She expresses her joy starting with her tail. My grandpa says its like a flag waving in the wind. When she is happy it’s like a sail that moves the rest of her body. (I love tails!) She also seems to think happy or sad Maizey kisses are the best way to let you know she’s with you.

My conclusions about dogs and human emotions? Anyone that shares their life with a 4legged friend knows that our pups react to us, happy or sad. But we know even more is that our pups stimulate and motivate our emotions. Even if the only  emotion is loving them!

Is It Raining Treats In Your House?

Due to the sky raining treats in return for them doing nothing but eating them, Maizey and Meeka have had a fun couple of days!

Why has the sky been raining treats? Because we have been playing at a contest on the Training Levels Yahoo Group.

The contest was to test a handlers click/treat (c/t) abilities. The rules were to time how long it took to c/t 15 treats. All the dogs had to do was start to eat each treat as it hit the ground and the handler could c/t again. Trust me this was more challenging than it sounds!

For those of you not familiar with clicker training it is not difficult, but it is a skill. As all skills do, it takes some precision, good timing, and great observation skills. So this was a quite clever way of showing most of us that we had room for improvement in our c/t abilities.

But how to improve with out confusing our dogs? I am so uncoordinated that I am not even allowed to play games where round objects must be propelled into circles for points, so timing and accuracy has been a challenge. Especially when shaping you usually have something in mind as an end goal for your pup, so the c/t are timed very carefully. If not timed correctly you may sabotage your pups understanding and success. Thus the skill part is important. More precision means the pup gets better information and is more successful.

This is where the contest showed me a new tool. Because all the girls had to do was eat and that pretty much guarantees their success, I could turn my ‘observation skills’ towards myself. At the same time they still thought this was the greatest game ever invented!

But it also taught us all a lot of other lessons. Everything from dog size to treat size and type was examined. And if you really want a treat click over to the group and watch some of the videos-very creative trainers they are over there!

What was the winning time? A three way tie: 15 treats in 8 seconds! Congratulations to those machine gun click/treaters! And our score? Maizey: 15 treats in 17.9 seconds. Meeka: 15 treats in 17.6 seconds.

Congratulations to our Big Girl! So what about you? Want to see your 4legged friend think they are in treat heaven? Then give the contest a try and let us know your results!
