The Ones We’ve Loved and Lost

Early this morning we lost one of our favorite 4legged friends. Levi was a our friends’ heart dog and we’ll miss him. My heart goes out to his mom and family.

As each one does, this loss has me thinking of the ones I’ve loved and lost. As a sort of tribute to the wonderful heart dog Levi was I want to share my lost heart dogs here. Each dog has their own lessons for us. Some get into our hearts more than others, but all stay with us forever. My aim is to take what each of these dogs has taught me and use it to be a better dog mom, trainer and teacher. In that way they stay alive with me even though they are gone in the today.

Meeka

Little Man

Sampson

I have to give Summit, our Alaskan Malamute a mention even though I don’t have access to a photo today. The lessons he gave me were some of the hardest and most valuable of any dog I’ve ever had.

Have you lost a heart dog? Give them a mention here and if you want say a bit about what made them so special. . .

When you can’t remove someone’s pain, sometimes all you can do is sit in the space the other is in and keep them company. Let’s all keep each other company in this space of loss. Thanks everyone.

I can’t help but remember Jed, out golden retriever. He was a quiet soul. We took him to ‘obedience’ school when he was young, and it taught us how to be with him. He had the best restraint of any dig I ever knew. Once we left in a hurry and we left a plate of pancakes on the edge of a low counter with the pancakes hanging off the plate right in his face. He must have stared at those pancakes for the whole 3 hours we were gone, but didn’t touch them. Boy did he get to eat pancakes when we got home. :-) ) He would always bury whatever you threw for him after the third throw. Just didn’t need that, I guess. He just wanted to be with us. It was enough. He lived to be 15, and left a huge hole when he died.
Just had to share. Condolences to those with a recent loss. It takes a while he heal.

I miss your Meeka! Her beautiful picture also brought back the fond memories of our Laura. Two beautiful gentle giant girls in the world!

Hugs to Levi’s mom and family!

I had my Bonnie-girl.  She was the best dog ever.  So sweet, so loving, always willing to try anything.  She went deaf, lost a toe, lost her tail, but was happy and playful up the moment she died from a heart attack at age 15.  I will love her forever.

It’s so hard to lose them. Thanks for posting about Levi. I’m still pretty much a mess and I just want to go home and sleep.  I’m so sorry about your losses too.  We just keep loving them and they don’t live long enough.
